ECDL

The ECDL establishes standards for everyone who uses a computer in either a professional or a personal capacity. It is a certificate that verifies your competence, declares your computer skills, and makes you readily mobile within Irish business and across the European Community.

Certify your skills

The European Computer Driving Licence is available to everyone.

Large multinationals have already adopted the licence, setting it as the performance benchmark they expect from their employees. The licence matches the needs of both Irish staff and employers in its clear definition of essential computer skills.  Having it opens the door to career opportunities and power-steers you into the technological future.

The ECDL Skills Card

The ECDL Skill Card records the skills you demonstrate in each of seven computer-related modules. As you pass each module successfully, the corresponding skill is noted in your card. The final achievement of a full card leads to the award of your licence.

The modules are:

1. Basic Concepts of Information Technology (IT)
2. Using a Computer & Managing Files
3. Word Processing
4. Spreadsheets
5. Databases
6. Presentations
7. Information and Communication

All but the first module are tests of practical skills rather than of theory. Tests consist of tasks chosen at random from a store of typical day-to-day computer operations. The seven tests may be taken in any order and over a period of time.

ECDL START

ECDL START is a certificate which certifies the passing of any four modules of the ECDL programme. The ECDL Start certificate will list any four completed modules (as specified by the candidate). The certificate clarifies the fact that ECDL Start certifies part-completion of the entire ECDL syllabus by stating “The ECDL Start certificate is awarded to a candidate who has completed four out of a possible seven modules of the ECDL programme. The certificate does not indicate that the candidate has completed the ECDL certificate.”

The cost of a Skills Card includes one ECDL certificate issue. While candidates should be encouraged to complete all modules to receive their full ECDL certificate, it is possible to apply their one certificate issue toward an ECDL Start certificate.

However, candidates who are issued an ECDL Start certificate under this scheme and who later complete the remaining modules toward full ECDL certification will be charged €20 for a full ECDL certificate.

The DITC Difference

ECDL Ireland has authorised test centres right around the country. Each is chosen for its rigorous adherence to the international testing standards.  Donegal IT Centre is proud to be an ECDL test centre.
